Edge lifting can be particularly noticeable on collars, cuffs, and plackets because these components experience frequent movement. The centre of a panel may remain firmly bonded while its edges begin to peel away. This problem can affect the appearance and durability of a garment, especially after repeated washing, ironing, or dry cleaning. When fusible interlining starts lifting around the perimeter, manufacturers should investigate pressure distribution, panel preparation, cutting, and fusing conditions instead of assuming that the entire material is defective.
Small components can be difficult to press evenly because the machine may not apply the same force across every part of their shape. A suitable pressing attachment or block can improve contact. Operators should also ensure that the fabric is smooth before pressing and that no seam, fold, or excess thickness prevents the layers from sitting evenly together. Correctly trimming the interlining within the seam allowance can also help prevent unsupported edges from becoming exposed stress points. Pressure calibration should be checked regularly, particularly around the edges of the press.
The selected interlining fabric also needs to suit the component being reinforced. A heavy material may be unnecessary for a small cuff or collar and can make the finished piece excessively rigid. If lifting continues, run controlled test pieces while checking temperature, pressure, and dwell time separately. Allow each sample to cool before inspection and subject the best-performing version to the expected care process. This method allows manufacturers to identify whether the problem is caused by application, machine contact, or material selection. Correcting the root cause is much more effective than repeatedly re-pressing defective garments.
