Bonding problems do not always begin at the fusing machine. Sometimes the underlying issue is a poor match between the support material and the fashion fabric. Every garment has different structural requirements, and the same interlining grade cannot deliver the ideal result across every application. Choosing fusible interlining should therefore involve evaluating fabric weight, garment construction, desired stiffness, care requirements, and the area where the material will be applied.
Heavy formal garments such as suit fronts, sherwanis, and blazers usually need stronger structural support. Woven grades are often appropriate for these larger panels because their construction provides strength and shape retention. Smaller components such as collars, cuffs, and plackets generally require less bulk and may use lighter grades. Delicate fabrics also need careful matching because excessive weight can interfere with drape, create a board-like feel, or cause strike-through. The adhesive coating and fusing conditions must work with the fashion fabric rather than against it.
A suitable interlining fabric should be tested before the production team commits to a large quantity. Place a sample on the actual fashion fabric, apply the intended fusing settings, and allow it to cool before evaluating the result. Check the appearance, hand-feel, flexibility, and adhesion. A wash or dry-cleaning test can provide additional evidence of durability. Manufacturers should also remember that woven and non-woven constructions are not interchangeable in every application. Matching the material correctly from the start can prevent many bonding problems and help achieve the intended garment structure without unnecessary stiffness or bulk.
