Bubbling is one of the most frustrating defects because the panel may look acceptable immediately after leaving the press. The problem can become more visible later when the garment is folded, worn, washed, or dry cleaned. In many cases, bubbling indicates that the adhesive did not distribute evenly across the surface. A successful fusible interlining application requires complete contact between the two layers, and even small pockets of air or uneven pressure can interfere with that process.

Before pressing, the fashion fabric and interlining should lie completely flat. Wrinkles, trapped seams, uneven thickness, or an improperly padded press bed can prevent consistent contact. Temperature and dwell time should also be checked because uneven adhesive activation can create areas with stronger and weaker bonding. If bubbling appears alongside scorching or shine, the machine may be operating at excessive heat or for too long. Operators should also inspect whether the correct coated side was placed against the fashion fabric.

The selected interlining fabric can influence the final result as well. A grade that is too heavy for a delicate fabric may create an unnatural surface, while an unsuitable coating may not bond effectively under the available equipment. Manufacturers should run a small test before starting a large production batch, especially when using a new fabric lot or changing suppliers. After fusing, allow the sample to cool properly before evaluating it. Testing the sample through the garment’s expected care process provides a better indication of long-term performance and helps prevent bubbling from becoming a costly production-wide defect.
